Despite School but Want Success
The author of the spoken word video, “Why I Hate School but Love Education” is Suli Breaks. Breaks is motivated by the phrase “Education is the Key” because education gives individuals the opportunity to become successful. Breaks is saying school is not for everyone, because one can learn things without being in an actual classroom. An education can be attained also by the way a person communicating with other people or groups, and also from their surroundings. The author’s purpose for this video is to let people know that just because someone might be a dropout, or think school is too stressful, people can still be educated. He is saying these individuals need to recognize an opportunity and take it. Breaks says don’t take the easy way out, or decide to work at fast food restaurant all your life because it’s easy. Education can be taught in many ways, not just in school, and that is one way a person can become successful. In this video Break uses pathos to show emotion, ethos to convince his audience and logos to persuade them.
The video is intended to inform people to rethink education and life itself. People who are already educated, people who were brought up in success, and the speaker himself, wouldn’t be the intended audience. He is talking about families or individuals that weren’t brought up in homes with a higher education. What prompts the author to make this video is to show society that there is more than one way to be educated. Steve Jobs and Bill Gate, graduated from a higher institution and became what they are now, but the truth is they didn’t. The message the author is trying to send is that a person has to be inspired in order for them to be educated. People can be educated in many ways, not just in school but in art, self-directed learning and more.
An educated person can convince his or her self to stay focused when faced with problems. Breaks gave strong examples of people who became successful without graduating from a higher institution. Breaks then names more individuals that become successful like, Mark Zuckerberg, Henry Ford, Bill Gates and Oprah Winfrey. Break wanted to get the audience motivated so that they can work even harder to become successful. Breaks uses ethos to build up is credibility by supporting arguments with names from famous people who became successful without a higher education. He further establishes himself as an educated young man as well, staying up late at night studying books trying to stay awake so he drinks Red Bull every night and day.
The speaker uses his mother as an example to strike emotion into is listeners. Breaks’ mother said he made her proud, but his “proud mother” didn’t turn up to his graduation after countless nights chasing his dream. Breaks then stated if a person don’t build his/her dream someone will hire you to build theirs. He then talks about Steve Jobs, Henry Ford and others who net worth is worth more than 100 mil but never graduated from higher institution. Breaks then further provides evidence by saying school is just a distant cousin because examiners have a checklist so even if you fail or not, they are still getting paid. He then continues his speech by saying ‘it doesn’t fool no good to spend money on education why because he has no common sense.” Individuals can start by making an outline of what they want their future to look like
Education is the key to almost everything society as to offer. After Breaks has is audience attention he then utilize logos by stating some facts about education and it can be obtain in many ways which brought fear into the audience. He starts to provide the audience with hope by letting them know that education can be applied wherever. Instead of trying to make the audience feel guilty, Breaks gains the audience’s attention by letting them understand the true meaning behind education. Breaks expands by saying why pay for education if you’re not inspired by it. Just by saying that gave individuals the courage to understand teaching. You have to be inspired for you to become educated. Breaks executes his points by saying if people are not going to school for the money than what are they doing it for a charity meaning people are hiding behind the word education to make it seems as if they are not interested in the money that they’re going to be earning later on in life.
In Conclusion, to this spoken words I have learned that in order for someone to get a person attention, I have to support my cause with reasoning and evidence so that they could get persuade. In order for someone to pursue their audience he or she first have to support their argument by using ethos, logos, and pathos. This will motivate individuals to read or lesson to a particular topic. A person well more likely lesson to someone that is persuasive than a boring person with no verifications.
